Since 1988, the International Dark-Sky Association (IDA) has recognized locations that are committed to preserving dark skies and providing education and exceptional opportunities to experience the wonder of the night sky. Fortunately for western Coloradoans, we don’t have to travel far to enjoy one of these special areas. The Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park is designated by the IDA as an International Dark Sky Park.

This prestigious title comes after 20-plus years of related efforts. Many of these are due to a long partnership with the Black Canyon Astronomical Society, which has aided the park in offering education and outreach programs, monitoring dark skies, and improving park lighting to decrease light pollution.
