No matter what time of year you decide to adventure up above treeline, all days in the alpine require technical gear that performs when you need it. Ortovox knows how to outfit mountaineers for everything that involves rocks and summits, wind and rain, snow and ice, and whether you’re climbing mountains in the summer and fall months or ski touring in the winter and spring, the Westalpen Softshell Jacket is that piece that will stay on you or at the top of you pack.

This outer layer is extremely durable with all the comforts of a softshell jacket. I scraped my elbows a number of times on large boulders and trees this past summer while testing the Westalpen Softshell, and it’s absolutely scuff-resistant. I’ve appreciated the versatility of the jacket as it is warm and water-resistant, yet with no membrane it’s breathable when I’m on the move, and features adjustable cuffs, hood and hem-width, so it’s adaptable for many conditions and in any adventure. The jacket is pleasantly soft and offers excellent stretch qualities for great freedom of movement.

The Merino mesh inserts in the chin area are an unexpected favorite feature of this piece, along with the Merino wool on the inside which is woven directly into the outer schoeller® fabric. These soft wool features ensure some extra ounces of comfort when the going gets tough, not to mention great temperature management provided by the natural material. The two front pockets on the jacket are thoughtfully placed to be compatible with a backpack and offer enough space to carry a phone, map and chapstick within quick reach.

The Westalpen is also available in  softshell pants, creating an unbeatable kit for any alpine endeavor.
