THE BOOK
AMOR FATI BY JACK MUELLER
Patio seating isn’t just for cocktails; a good book is also a great addition to an afternoon of lounging. A book of poetry, specifically, is quite fantastic for a lovely spring siesta in the sun. Lithic Press in Fruita offers a great variety of local published authors. They host regular readings and are a great part of the community. One such book of poetry that is profoundly epic is Amor Fati by the late Jack Mueller. Beautifully published by Lithic Press in 2013, this gem offers an array of different poetry that will make anyone smile. Within its pages is a variety of poems that vary in length and depth.
This book of poetry has called to me throughout my years of owning it, and I am never left dissatisfied. Jack Mueller was a favorite among locals and is still widely celebrated today. Lithic Press hosts the Jack Mueller Festival each fall to honor the artist and genius that he was. When reading his poetry, it’s easy to see why he had such an amazing impact. Amor Fati translates to “Love of Fate.” It means that we must take enjoyment in, or at least see the necessity of, what comes into our lives. In the spring, it’s so nice to shed the winter layers and enjoy whatever the rest of the year brings, whether it be good or bad. Pictured is my own well-loved copy of the book; stop by Lithic to enjoy and love one of your own.
THE BEVERAGE
HIGHLANDS DISTILLERY BLOODY MARY
Tucked away in Grand Junction, Colorado, is a little place of bliss called Highlands Distillery. Located at 782 24 Road, this diamond in the rough offers handcrafted spirits that will be sure to leave you impressed. The cocktails look marvelous and trendy, but they also taste magnificent. The laid- back atmosphere pairs well with their easy drinking concoctions that will be sure to make you a regular. Luckily the menu rotates seasonally, so new favorites are always assured. With the rebirth of patio season, this venue will be a great place to explore. They offer outdoor seating, cornhole, live music and Trivia Thursdays. The real magic however, happens every Sunday from 2 to 8 p.m. — the Bloody Mary bar. Might I suggest that you check this out as soon as possible? A giant jug of homemade mix and vodka awaits! The homemade mix is wonderous, but the best part is the bar of goodies that you get to put in yourself. My absolute favorite part is getting to choose what and how much goes into your Bloody Mary. Do you like olives? They have four different kinds. They have a ton of pickled items just waiting for you: pickles, olives, asparagus, okra, beans, baby corn and artichoke hearts. Don’t forget to add cheese, a slider and some little meat bites too! To top it off, you have to grab the traditional celery for mixing, and, maybe, get a little adventurous with some hot sauce. There are several of those, as well. The staff is friendly; the atmosphere is great; the drinks are superb. Highlands Distillery is definitely a must visit.
