Adventure Spotlight: RockyTrax Camper + Dirt Bike Rentals | Guided Off Road Tours + Training
RockyTrax is an outdoor adventure company that was born out of a love for family, the outdoors and adventure. Andy Hanks, owner/operator, and his wife Kristi have lived, camped and explored in the Western Colorado region and beyond for over 30 years.
Along the way, Andy and Kristi raised their four children to have the same passion for the outdoors. This passion led Andy to leave his 26-year corporate career to start RockyTrax in 2018. Operating from their home in Glade Park, Colorado, RockyTrax offers camper rentals, camper delivery and set up services, dirt bike rentals, guided dirt bike tours and entry level coaching for dirt bike trail riding.
Spoke+Blossom asked Andy a few questions about the RockyTrax experience:
S+B: How does an adventure experience with RockyTrax provide a unique experience in Western Colorado?
We take the hassle out of starting an adventure. Owning and maintaining a camper is expensive and time consuming — especially for folks who may only campout two or three times a year. Renting a camper from RockyTrax for a weekend or a few days saves significant time and money. If someone wants to try RV camping but doesn’t have the right tow vehicle or camper “know how,” RockyTrax can deliver and set everything up (including a generator and firewood). Now all they have to do is show up and enjoy. And when they’re done, we’ll come pick up the camper.
We also know some great out of the way camp spots that aren’t crowded or overrun with tourists. People, wishing to get away from city life, will tow a camper for hours from the front range and elsewhere only to set up in a crowded RV park because they don’t have the time or experience to go off the beaten path. We can outfit a stress-free and hassle-free experience in some fantastic uncrowded locations. This frees up guests to make the most of their time relaxing, exploring and sharing experiences with family and friends. Helping families create memories and share fun adventures in the outdoors is what RockyTrax is all about.
S+B: What would you say are some of the benefits of going on a guided adventure with RockyTrax, rather than on your own?
Experienced and novice off-road riders alike will often travel to the Western Slope and go to the popular tourist areas because that is what they read about or seen in a video. These areas are beautiful, but often times they are overcrowded and becoming more like tourist traps. For some, this may be the experience they are seeking, but for those folks who want to see the uncluttered and unspoiled remote areas of Colorado and Utah, RockyTrax can deliver.
We know the area and trails and offer easy scenic tours, technically challenging tours or a combination. We have half-day and full-day tours as well as multi-day tours with overnight lodging, meals and a support truck to carry luggage, tools, water and snacks. We are federally permitted to guide on the Grand Mesa, Uncompahgre Plateau, Bangs Canyon, Cactus Park, Rabbit Valley and other regional favorites. We also guide on the Tabeguache, Rimrocker and Kokopelli trails, which allows us to take guests from Grand Junction to Montrose and Moab and back to Grand Junction on mostly backroads and trails. We can also customize guided trips to meet individual needs and expectations.
Another great service is our entry level off-road coaching and training, designed to help street riders and beginners transition to off-road riding and become comfortable with traveling on a variety of terrain. Some of our most satisfying experiences have been helping beginners go from little off road experience to riding in terrain they never thought possible — all while staying safe and having a blast. RockyTrax has found that people who mountain bike transition quite well to off-road motorbikes. If folks love flowy downhill mountain biking then they just might love dirt biking, because it’s the same fun dynamic — without the uphill grind!
S+B: Anything else you’d like to add about RockyTrax and the experiences you offer?
We at RockyTrax feel blessed to live, work and play in such a stunning location and we give God thanks for this beautiful creation and our ability to explore and have adventures so close to home. We have camped, hunted and lived in this backcountry setting and have explored it on foot, horseback, mountain bike, dirt bike, ATV and 4X4. We appreciate a variety of exploration and know how to interface with the different groups that share our passion for the outdoors. We love sharing this passion and helping other folks have memorable experiences and adventures. Come stay and ride with us, or let us customize a great camping experience and you’ll see and feel the difference!
