All spring and summer sports enthusiasts look forward to May flowers — what most Coloradoans recognize as a fresh start to the new season. Why not celebrate with a biking challenge to get the blood pumping? On May 8, 2021, you can with the 12 Hours of Mesa Verde Race

The 12 Hours of Mesa Verde Race is a premier endurance cycling adventure in Cortez organized by volunteers dedicated to improving the lives of youth in Southwest Colorado. Since its founding 18 years ago, the event has raised over $500,000 in total towards local organizations that focus on the growth and development of underserved and at-risk youth.

2019 benefitted over 20 organizations with funds raised, and a turnout of over 850 riders, with family and friends in attendance, selling-out the race!

“2020 was canceled, as most events, but we're back in 2021!” says Kelly Kirkpatrick, director of tourism for Mesa Verde.

The popular race is held at the well-known Phil’s World, a 26.8-mile rollercoaster ride of a course. The Rib Cage is the most notable feature of the area starring fast, rolling terrain with jumps, loops and fun for everyone

“Phil's World each year has a theme, exciting activities and events for single, duo and team riding categories,” Kirkpatrick says. “This year’s theme is ‘Viva Las Vegas!’”

The competition has multiple riding categories, ranging from a solo rider to three- to four-person teams, with a new category of a three- to four-person family team added to the roster for this year! Each category has different classes within their group, those being male, female, co-ed and geezer (50-plus).

All these exciting new elements of the race are coupled with precautions due to the COVID-19 pandemic. These changes work to ensure the safety of all bikers, organizers and volunteers involved in the 12 Hours of Mesa Verde Race.

“There will be no after-event dinner, plus safely spaced registration and check-in stations,”  Kirkpatrick says. “Handwashing stations will be provided, and heats will be staggered starts to allow distance between riders.”

The typically sold-out event is hoping to comeback in full-swing to support the Southwest Colorado communities and bring bikers of all calibers together. Register today before capacity is capped!

“Come out and join us, it's a great event on a spectacular trail, with awesome people for a worthy cause!” Kirkpatrick adds.
