Gear Hub: Tailwind Nutrition Has A New Hydration Drink Mix
After celebrating their 10th anniversary this past spring, Tailwind Nutrition out of Durango has just launched Active Hydration, a drink mix with electrolytes, collagen and vitamin C. Active Hydration mixes clear with water, has a light, fruity taste, and is a refreshing way to keep your body well balanced during workouts at the gym, on a hike, grabbing a quick run or ride — or just to stay hydrated on your busy days.
We’ve used Tailwind’s Endurance Fuel for many miles of endurance activities and then followed up activities with their Recovery Mix. After testing Active Hydration (we like the Strawberry Lemonade flavor best), we can confirm that this third addition to the Tailwind quiver is an ideal complement to a lifestyle of movement and play in Colorado and beyond.
In 2012, athlete Jeff Vierling founded Tailwind to find a better nutrition solution for endurance athletes after competing in the Leadville 100 for multiple years and learning the hard way how important nutrition is to performing your best while enjoying the effort. Its first product, Endurance Fuel, solved common issues that endurance athletes experience: stomach problems (feeling full/bloated and worse), keeping track of calories, electrolytes and hydration, and the sickly sweet taste of sports drinks. It followed with Recovery Mix, containing its complete protein built from rice protein and amino acids, with carbohydrates and electrolytes for a complete and fast recovery.
“For 10 years, Tailwind has fueled adventures with Endurance Fuel and helped athletes recover quickly with Recovery Mix. Customers asked us for a way to hydrate for shorter or less intense workouts when they don’t need the full energy boost of Endurance Fuel,” says Vierling. “We are thrilled to introduce Active Hydration after two years of development and testing on the trails here in Durango, Colorado. The initial feedback from testers has been amazing, and we can’t wait to share it.”
Active Hydration is lightly sweetened with cane sugar so it has a clean flavor. Similar to Tailwind’s Endurance Fuel, Active Hydration takes advantage of the body’s active transport mechanism to maximize absorption of electrolytes and water. Plus, Active Hydration includes grass-fed bovine collagen peptides. Studies of collagen supplementation combined with exercise show promising results improving joint functionality. Vitamin C is a necessary cofactor in collagen synthesis and functions as an antioxidant.
Active Hydration is available in four bright flavors — Cherry Acai, Tangerine Grapefruit, Tropical Orange, and Strawberry Lemonade — Active Hydration is packaged as individual serving packets in 12-pack boxes. One 9-gram packet has 35 calories when mixed with 12 ounces of water.
