Climb For Community In Crested Butte: Living Journeys Hosts Annual Summit Hike + Trail Runs To Support Locals Impacted By Cancer
Sometimes you climb your own mountain, and sometimes you climb a mountain for someone or something that needs your strength and support. For those participating in the Living Journeys Summit Hike, half marathon and 10k on Mount Crested Butte, this year on Saturday, July 29, 2023, each step can be dedicated to a loved one, a neighbor or a stranger impacted by cancer.
The half marathon and 10k each have cash prizes of $500 for first place, $300 for second place and $100 for third place. Funds raised from the annual event go directly to Living Journeys’ critical programs which are a lifeline to people in the Gunnison Valley battling cancer.
Eric Larsen is no stranger to a challenge. As a Crested Butte-based polar adventurer and expedition guide, his freezing cold efforts have totaled to more North and South Pole expeditions than any American in history. Larsen was diagnosed with Stage 3B Colorectal Cancer in January or 2021, his hardest challenge yet, and he says it was Living Journeys, a Gunnison Valley nonprofit, that helped save his life.
“Having cancer is like drowning, and neighbors, friends and family aren't always available to throw you a rope,” shares Larsen. "Thankfully, Living Journeys was always there to provide incredible support. It is a vital organization to the Gunnison Valley community.”
The Living Journeys Summit Hike and trail runs are an opportunity for local residents and visitors to Crested Butte to come together for a day of inspiration, remembrance and support. Participants can choose from three exciting options: the 23rd annual Summit Hike, 11th annual half marathon or inaugural 10K. Each event offers a unique experience for both seasoned athletes and casual participants while showcasing the breathtaking beauty of the Gunnison Valley. A post-event catered lunch celebration awaits all event participants at the base of Mount Crested Butte. \
“It's such a heart-filled day with so much positive energy,” explains Maria Hennessey, Larsen’s wife. “It's emotional but fun! There is a strong sense of caring and connection from the volunteers, participants, staff, etc. While hiking up and down the summit — I haven't done the runs — there are smiles, high fives, tears and good vibes. When we first did the hike as a family in 2021, six months after Eric's diagnosis, we felt so much gratitude for all the friends and strangers that were there.”
In 2022, Living Journeys distributed over $160,000 in financial grants and delivered over 2,000 healthy meals and boxes of seasonal fresh produce. Whether it’s finding a volunteer driver to give a ride to treatment or hosting a youth group dinner with a local therapist, Living Journeys ensures no one fights cancer alone.
Crested Butte residents and visitors are encouraged to participate, and those visiting can look into accommodations at Crested Butte Mountain Resort base-area hotels like the Elevation Hotel & Spa. In town, visitors can look into staying at Elk Mountain Lodge and take the bus or drive five minutes up to the mountain.
