Ouray Winter Wine Festival Returns For Its Second Year
Looking for a reason to escape to the Switzerland of America? Look no further than the Ouray Winter Wine Festival held on Feb. 17, 2024, presented by Sauvage Spectrum, Elevation Weddings & Events and the Wright Opera House.
A Toast to Inspiration
Now in its second year, the festival's origin story is rooted in the idea of showcasing the unique charm of Ouray and supporting local businesses. The realization dawned upon the organizers at Sauvage Spectrum as they navigated the challenges of running a business in the area. Partnering with Elevation Weddings & Events and the Wright Opera House, the team sought to bring together locals and tourists, offering them a curated event to enjoy amidst the uncertainties brought about by the pandemic.
“The ‘wow’ factor of Ouray's geographic setting is very nostalgic to most long-time local Western Slopers,” says Patric Matysiewski, winemaker and co-founder of Sauvage Spectrum. “We felt the need to showcase the quality of our wines and our industry partners in a setting such as the historic Wright Opera House because the venue setting alone has the opportunity to offer an unmatched experience, and then paired with the libations and artisans ... it’s a real winning combination.”
What to Expect
Spoke+Blossom had the opportunity to experience the inaugural event first-hand last year, and we felt it was executed perfectly. Attendees can anticipate a sensory journey through the offerings of Western Colorado's vineyards and local purveyors. The festival promises an intimate experience, featuring eight wineries, three distilleries and one cidery. Guests can indulge in tastings, purchase wines by the glass or bottle and relish the warmth of fireside lounge seating. Plus, the event goes beyond libations, incorporating local musicians, unique culinary delights and interactive retail experiences.
Two sessions are available for attendees (purchase here), each offering a distinct atmosphere. VIP tickets provide an exclusive lounge experience, complete with food, a complimentary drink and door prizes.
Western Colorado's Vineyards in Winter
The decision to showcase Western Colorado's vineyards is not only about the quality of wines but also the allure of Ouray's geographic setting. The historic Wright Opera House provides a unique backdrop, while the winter season, marked by solace in the San Juan Mountains, adds a touch of magic to the event.
“We want to bring awareness to Colorado’s growing wine industry, particularly in our neck of the woods. Choosing Ouray to showcase this was a no-brainer,” shares Krysta Cossitt, owner and lead planner of Elevation Weddings & Events. “The juxtaposition of snow-capped peaks with typical vineyard landscapes creates a memorable experience for festival attendees. Having the festival in the winter also offers a different perspective on wine culture where most might associate wine with spring and summer drinking.”
Beyond showcasing the region's wines, the festival aims to boost awareness of this unique part of Colorado, supporting local businesses and contributing to the local economy.
