Fruita’s Imondi Wake Zone To Host The Colorado State Wakesports Championships
This summer, the Grand Junction Sports Commission (GJSC) is excited to announce a partnership with the World Wake Association (WWA) to bring the brand-new Colorado State Championships to Fruita’s Imondi Wake Zone. From June 28-30, 2024, an expected 200 athletes from around the country will participate in one day of practice and two days of competition across seven wakesport disciplines.
Developed by riders — for riders — the WWA has been dedicated to promoting and growing competitive wakesports around the world. By supporting riders, setting competitive standards and organizing events for all skill levels, it has become the world’s leading wakeboard organization and governing body of the sport.
The WWA recently announced the introduction of four state-level competitions to the organization’s 2024 event lineup. Alongside Florida, Texas and Georgia, the organization has chosen Colorado to host one of its first state championship events. While traditionally hosted in coastal locations, this year’s event gives athletes the opportunity to enjoy the high desert climate of Western Colorado during the competition this summer.
“We are excited to announce the addition of state championships to our event lineup in 2024,” says Shannon Starling, president of the WWA. “This expansion aligns with our vision of providing athletes across the nation with increased opportunities to participate in high quality wakesport competitions.” The WWA alluded to the area’s natural amenities and their relationship with GJSC as the deciding factors in the selection of this location.
The GJSC, which has always been focused on driving sports tourism to Mesa County and creating opportunities for its residents, is thrilled to be working with the WWA this summer to organize the Colorado state championships. “As a community, we are so excited to partner with the World Wake Association and grow wakeboarding in Western Colorado. This is just the start,” says Ben Snyder, executive director of the GJSC. “We are also thrilled to be partnering with the team out at Imondi Wake Zone, who have worked so hard to build an amazing facility that attracts more outdoor recreation.”
Kodi and Victor Imondi, owners of Imondi Wake Zone, are just as excited to share the joy of towed sports with riders and spectators alike. “We have worked diligently for years to bring wakesports events to the Grand Valley. We are thrilled to host the World Wake Association and support them in their mission across the globe.”
The cable disciplines will be hosted at Fruita’s Imondi Wake Zone from June 28-30, but due to this season’s boating restrictions at Highline Lake State Park, the boating portion of the event will be hosted at Sweitzer Lake State Park in Delta. Find the complete schedule at grandjunctionsports.org.
